Odesa Bulgarian Drama Theater was founded by the Ukrainian Public Organization “Congress of Bulgarians of Ukraine”. The troupe includes Bessarabian Bulgarians, as well as Odessa residents, who united for the shared goal – the reborn of the Bulgarian theater in Odessa. The reborn, because the Bulgarian theater has existed for a short time in Odessa until the 1940th. In May 2013 Theater presented their first performance – “Bus”, by the Bulgarian dramatist S. Stratiev (director – I. Ravitsky). In May 2014 they presented its second premiere – the play “The Decameron”, based on J. Boccaccio (director – I. Ravitsky). The works were awarded by various international prizes. Performances continue both in Russian and in Bulgarian so everybody can visit the Bulgarian Theater. The sponsor of the theater is the President of the Congress of Bulgarians of Ukraine Yuriy Gramatik.
From the play “Bus” to the play “Grenholm Method” by Jordi Halseran, the theater actors always discuss obstacles of society, love, money, ghostly values of the present, future, and past.
A lot of great stars worked with the theater: People’s Artist of Ukraine Igor Ravitsky, Alexander Onishchenko, choreographer Diana Kostyka, actors of Bolgarian theater themselves – Vitaliy Zelenkov and Stanislav Sadakliev. Theater participates in international theater festivals, receive high awards and invitations to the stages of Sofia, Svilengrad, Sozopol, Topolovgrad.
